The Review
We’re reviewing the durability, even heating, ease of use, versatility, cleanup, and value of Calphalon Premier Space Saving Stainless Steel Cookware.
Durability
Calphalon has a reputation for designing high-quality cookware, and the stackable collection is no exception. These pans have a heavy-gauge aluminum core construction wrapped in stainless steel. The stainless steel is made of various alloys that are resistant to corrosion and maintain a long-lasting, lustrous appeal. The three layers extend up to the sides for optimal durability and heat distribution.
Notches in the handles and lids keep the pans locked in place when stacked, so they don’t wobble. This feature makes it possible to remove a pot from the bottom of the stack without scratching the one above it. You’ll find this cookware relatively heavy. The 10-piece set weighs just over 25 pounds, making it resistant to bending and warping.
The Premier Space Saving Cookware is broiler or oven-safe up to 450ºF and also safe for use in the dishwasher. All the products in these sets come with full lifetime warranties, in addition to excellent customer support.
You can also use metal utensils without damaging the surface, even with the nonstick collections. To preserve the surfaces of the nonstick sets, we recommend placing a protective layer between each pan. The hard-anodized bodies won’t damage as quickly, but continuous use could show signs of wear and tear.
Even Heating
The aluminum core delivers fast and even heat distribution on any stovetop, including induction. When cooking meat, you’ll get a perfect brown sear and beautifully deglazed sauces. The pan doesn’t have hot spots. Instead, heat is distributed across the entire base and sides of this kitchenware evenly.
Unfortunately, the stainless steel handles get hot, even though they should stay cool to the touch. We highly recommend using potholders to touch the handles while cooking. Since the lids and their grips are flat, they can heat up very quickly and burn unsuspecting hands.
When cooking with the stainless steel cookware, you can use less heat than you would usually. The hard-anodized pans will take slightly longer to preheat. However, both do an excellent job of cooking food evenly all the way through. You should avoid dry heating the nonstick cookware. Instead, add a small amount of oil before you turn on the stove.
The stainless steel pans require preheating before you put any oil or butter into them. You can check if the pot is ready by adding a drop of water. If the water dances for a moment before evaporating, the pan is prepared to use. However, if it crackles and instantly disappears, your pot is probably too hot.
Ease of Use
You’ll love the stacking feature of the Premier Space Saving sets. Pans and lids with the same diameter can stack in any order and lock into place. This handy feature prevents your cookware from leaning or tipping over when stacked high. For the most space efficiency, start with the shallowest pan at the bottom and deeper ones at the top.
The lids fit snuggly to seal in flavors and moisture, but there are no air holes to allow steam to escape. It’s also challenging to tilt the tops, creating the potential for pots to boil over. However, the secure handles on both sides allow for easy pouring and draining.
Getting used to the shape of the lid handles takes time, and they tend to heat up more than lids with standard knobs. Despite their tendency to get hot, the handles provide a firm and balanced grip. Convenient loop handles on the pots make them simple to maneuver.
Another aspect to consider is the usefulness of the stackability. The 3-piece sets won’t save as much space in the kitchen as a 6-piece or 10-piece set. You’ll want to get pans with different diameters so that you can divide them into two or three separate stacks. When stacked too high, the cookware near the bottom can be challenging to access.
Versatility
The Premier Space Saving Stainless Steel Cookware is suitable all stovetops, including induction. You can use the hard-anodized collection with gas, electric, electric coil, glass, and halogen ranges. All the Space Saving Cookware is oven-safe up to 450ºF.
Every lid is interchangeable with a pan of the same diameter. This feature is practical since you can choose the type of cover you want to use for a particular dish. When storing, you can stack the lids on top of the cookware, or in between individual pieces.
The 10-piece collection comes with a versatile range of pots and pans in shapes and sizes that meet the demands of nearly any recipe. If you need to cook for a large family, we recommend an additional stack of 12-inch pans, or the Supper Club set. The 8-inch and 10-inch cookware can’t serve dinner party portions.
Cleanup
All Calphalon Premier Space Saving Cookware is safe for the dishwasher, which makes cleaning up quick. However, you should avoid using any detergents with citrus or bleach since these can damage the finish. Handwashing is the best way to preserve the appearance and functionality of your kitchenware.
The stainless steel requires more effort to clean than the nonstick pans, and don’t always get completely clean in the dishwasher. When food sticks to the stainless steel, it’s best to let it soak it in warm water and soap before cleaning with a nonabrasive scrubber. The capped rivets can collect grime, but some Bar Keeper’s Friend can help in difficult cleaning situations.
Before the first use, you should always wash your cookware in soapy water and allow it to dry thoroughly. Avoid cooking with aerosol sprays that can leave a residue that’s difficult to remove. An oil mister is a better alternative and won’t damage the surface of your pans. Forceful impacts and sliding pots over the lids can result in scratches.
Value
This cookware is worth the initial investment if you’re searching for high-quality pans in a versatile range of sizes that also save space in your cabinet. The space saving aspect is most beneficial if you plan to purchase five or more pieces. You probably won’t need as many lids since they fit all the same-sized pans.
A 10-piece set will contain everything the average household needs. However, if you cook for a large family or regularly entertain guests, the 15-piece collection will be more practical. The large, 12-inch pans can accommodate group meals and generous portions.
Calphalon’s Premier Space Saving pans won’t perform entirely as well as All-Clad cookware, but it’s only half the price. If you consider the cost difference, the Calphalon kitchenware is an excellent value. You’ll get the same even heating properties and robust construction with Premier Space Saving Cookware as you would with more expensive options.
