Product Review: All-Clad D5

All-Clad is a giant in the world of gourmet cookware. Once you’ve had your introductory cooking sets for your first kitchen and you’re ready to upgrade, All-Clad is typically one of the big names that comes up. They provide durable materials, excellent construction, and wonderful cooking.

Acquiring some All-Clad pots and pans can send your cooking to the next level, but they’re quite an investment. The D5 set is an excellent higher-end cookware set when you’re ready, so let’s take a look to see if it’s the right one for you.

All-Clad D5 Cookware Set – The Details

The All-Clad D5 cookware set comes in several options, but the most common one is the ten-piece.

All-Clad’s main D5 set is a simple option with several pieces that cover a range of cooking tasks. It’s a much bigger investment than the standard cookware set, but upgrading to this set has benefits.

Construction and Materials

The D5 set is a brush stainless steel construction that uses five different layers for durability and even heating. It uses 18/10 stainless steel aluminum sandwiched in between. The exterior layers are stainless, and the bottom uses a magnetic steel to make it induction-capable.

Aluminum provides better heat conduction so that the pans take less time to preheat. Steel wrapped all the way from the bottom to the sides keeps heat even and makes it easier to cook without hot spots.

The handles are ergonomic and welded to the sides for a more durable construction. With three steel layers and two aluminum, these are not exactly lightweight; they feel substantial in your hands. The handles are all steel, which conducts heat much more slowly. They stay cooler during cooking.

With three different steel layers, the D5 set is less likely to warp at high heat. Aluminum allows you to cook at a slightly lower heat setting than you normally would anyway because the layers react to heat so well.

It has a textured finish to help prevent sticking, but it isn’t a true nonstick surface. Stainless doesn’t have a good track record with sticking food, but this is an improvement.

The pots and pans follow a classic design with brushed steel to prevent scratches and allow you to serve directly from the pots themselves.

They feature flared edges to prevent drips when you pour. The five-layer design prevents both warping at high heats and hot spots. All-Clad has a patent on this particular method, making it one of the few five-ply options out there.

The lids are well-fitting and stainless. The handles are also riveted to the tops for durability. They allow a good amount of moisture to remain in the pot without causing food to get soggy. None of the tops are interchangeable, unfortunately, but they are easy to store.

This collection of pots and pans covers a variety of cooking tasks. It might be an investment, but you get a collection that covers what you need without having to add in any more pieces. If you already own a large number of pots and pans, downsizing to this particular set is going to still give you plenty of freedom to cook what you need.

All-Clad’s performance is excellent. The steel and aluminum layers perform almost effortlessly. They really shine on an induction cooktop, but even if you’re cooking on gas, all of the pieces in the set work quite well.

If you preheat the pots and pans before adding your food, you can prevent food from sticking. Make sure that you get your pan at the right temperature and add your oil or butter before putting your food in the bottom, and you should see a better performance from your steel.

Some food may stick because stainless steel is just like that, but making sure to preheat and add oil before food ever touches the bottom is going to make things a lot easier on you. After that, the heat is even, and it’s a piece of cake to brown meats or cook liquids like soups or stocks without getting burned spots.

They’re oven- and broiler-safe up to 600 degrees and can be washed in the dishwasher. If you want to preserve the exterior, you may choose to hand wash the pots, but the brushed steel finish will keep the pots from looking banged up even if you do not hand wash.
